HRT is great if you can tolerate it. After a few weeks of build up, your mind clears and you get much more energy - or at least I did, and it was great. Perimenopause does absolutely suck, so you might well be right that a lot of the distress is down to that. I remember there were days before I got on HRT that I thought I was going mad because I was so angry and I couldn't control it, and days when nothing seemed worthwhile at all. The HRT should indeed improve that a lot.
My brother in law died of alcoholism last year. He was 59, which is the same age I am now and seemed really young to everyone at the funeral. He died of multiple bleeds on the brain because his blood vessels had been weakened by the alcohol, and they couldn't even take his organs for organ donation because they were too damaged. So yes, it really is healthy to avoid drink. Sorry to be so definite about that, but it was a huge shock to the whole family, and I would not like that to happen to you.
