Interesting thing about the moon... it actually does affect a lot.
Without it, earth days would be shorter, climate would be much less stable, earth would rotate faster, and the axis would be less stable. The tidal forces it creates also helps maintain the molten, liquid core, and with that, the magnetic field generated by it, which keeps cosmic radiation at bay.
If the moon were to disappear, most life probably would follow.
That being said, its orbit is gradually expanding. It's thought that it will eventually leave our orbit and become a moon to Venus... not anywhere near our lifetimes, though.
