Was just getting ready for bed, and noticing that my hair is really, really seriously fucked up.

I don't know what to do. This was done two weeks ago but the damage is just showing more every day.

See, for Faerieworlds back in July, my stylist asked if just this once we should bleach my hair all the way through to the ends, to really freshen the purple. We usually just bleach the roots, and I re-purple the length of it to the ends - since they're already bleached, they take the purple just fine. I was down for this extra bleaching though, as I planned to cut it all off afterward anyway, so it could take a little damage.

Well, when I cut it all off in August, she bleached (the parts that are dyed purple) all the way through the ends again. I figured, well, it can probably take it twice in a row, since it's so short now.

Last time she bleached it all the way through the ends again. I just sort of figured she knew what she was doing, and would ask her to not do that next time to keep it from getting so fried.

I noticed when I got home that when I went to brush and style my hair, it was breaking off in chunks all over the place. I knew this was from the triple-frying, and tried to be careful, and thought I'd just try to extra-condition it and be extra sure to ask not to bleach the entire length of my hair next time.

Well, I've been conditioning like mad - big long soaks followed by leave-in conditioner every day, and it's still breaking. And breaking. And breaking. It's to the point where it looks like I have uneven sort of half-grown-out bangs. The hair in the front is supposed to be the longest. Now it's poking me in the eyes regularly.

I only just got a good look at how bad it's gotten and I realized that the trouble I've had with styling lately is due to all this breakage - I couldn't figure out why it keeps looking mullet-ish - too full in the top and middle, too thin as it goes down. I can try to tame this with blow-drying and styling but that's just going to break more of it off and worsen the problem.

Aaaghgghghgh.

I've never had this happen before. My hair is relatively strong. But it couldn't take this much abuse.

I don't know what to do. She did my hair PERFECTLY for so long, before the Faerieworlds incident. That was the same time that the brown turned black. I tried to suggest to her that it was because she was putting the purple on directly over the freshly processed brown, but she didn't seem to think that was the case. I could SEE the purple turning the brown black in the mirror, I know this is at least part of it - unless she was really dying it black. Ugh. I don't know.

She fixed the brown part, sort of. But she was insistent that it had nothing to do with the purple going over the top of it, so I'm afraid it's just going to get dyed black again the next time I go in, unless I take the purple dye away from her and do it myself. (I used to do it myself at home, she's only been doing the purple my last two visits. The two that also included black instead of brown streaks between the purple.)

I don't know if I should try to get her to fix the breakage - they can do deep conditioning, right? - or if I should just leave and go find a new stylist. I think maybe it's time for a change. I don't know if I can deal with telling her that she ruined my hair. I think she's a wonderful person, I know she didn't do it on purpose, but I already had her do a "re-do" to fix the brown and I feel terrible about going in again for another fix (they don't charge for them, but I tip the same) two weeks later.

Agghghgh I don't know what to do. I just want my hair to not be fucked up. *cry*

I had this problem once when I re-blonded my hair too soon at the stylist - she gave me a glass protein capsule (I think you can get them at most salons) and it really, really helped. Also I followed up for a few weeks with Aussie Deeeeep conditioner.

Good luck!

on the one hand... sometimes things get fucked up... we're all human... if you love this hairperson, that's totally fair...

on the other... if you decide to try another hairperson, I have one I (and many others) will very very highly recommend...

I know if it were me I would just find someone new. Partly because I'm a chicken about these things, and partly because it sounds you've already tried to explain she made a mistake before (about the brown/black thing) and although she fixed it, she insisted it wasn't her fault. Which it sounds like it was.

awww that sucks :(
maybe it's the time of year as well? my hair always gets more brittle in the winter.

but really she shouldn't need to bleach all the way to the ends if it's already been bleached before. with my bloo i completely stopped bleaching because of that same problem. now i use the dark blue base by Ice Cream with 10 volume developer to add a blueish base and slightly lighten my hair, then i just add the semi-perm bloo over it and it's working well. too much bleaching will weaken your hair and in the end cause the pigments to not stay as well as they should. the ends of my hair were bleached too much and have that exact problem, which is why i started putting pink over them (for some reason the pink sticks).

maybe talk to her about what happened before getting her to do your hair again. starting with a new stylist might end up in disaster.. then again it might end up working out better. hard to say. =/

i would say it's time for a new stylist. it sounds like you've tried to work with your current one as best you can, and that both of y'all are just not meshing very well anymore. what i would suggest you do in the meantime is call the salon you go to, say that your hair is absolutely fried, and that you want to come in to see what they can do about it, but that you want a different stylist. this will help both you and your previous stylist save some face and avoid awkwardness.

i'm sorry your poor hair is in such trouble! i hope you can figure out how to soothe and calm it!

Leave it to someone from the Midwest to suggest this, but Tail and Mane shampoo (for horses) works quite well, from what I have been told. Plus it makes your hair grow faster...
