Star-nosed.
Nov. 30th, 2007 04:29 pmDude. I was trying to find out if the critter in my previous post was a gopher or a groundhog (I think it's a gopher - and I think the dramatic hampster was probably a gopher too, although man do gophers, groundhogs, and prairie dogs look similar sometimes!), and I came across a critter I've never heard of, the Star-nosed Mole. Holy crap that thing is weird:

and awesome!:

Its nose, the wiki article says, develops unlike anything else found in the animal world - it buds out like a flower and then the pieces break free and spread like petals blooming. Ack!

Sea slugs.
Nov. 30th, 2007 04:57 pmDude! Dude. I've progressed into obsessing over sea slugs.
There are endless varieties in gorgeous colors.
Why the hell didn't I study biology? I wanted to. I wanted to be a marine biologist. Was more fascinated with dolphins when I was younger, but I'm sure I would have found my perfect niche. I guess I just assumed it wasn't possible for me, sinceI'm bad at I hate math. I could research these forever and never get tired of looking at them:

( If you like yourself, you'll look at more here. )
This just barely scratches the surface of the beauty and variety. Nudibranches are just ONE TYPE of sea slug, and their variety alone is endless.
Do want.
