Got desperate enough at the farmers market today to try my old food stamp card. I know they let you carry over balances, but I didn't know for how long, and my card was from last year. Got declined as invalid. Not the end of the world; there was maybe a four dollar balance on it. But those dollars get doubled at the markets (up to ten). Sad I didn't use them sooner but that's okay.

A sweet silver haired lady approached me a couple minutes later at a vegetable vendor and gave me her ten doubled food tickets. "They're for you," she insisted when I tried to make sure she didn't need them for herself.

It's hard not to start crying in the middle of the market when stuff like that happens.
