I've been journaling on paper. It's been wonderful. I prefer typing in a lot of ways, though - I will always come back here.

I just... since I've been injured, I can't go on my long hikes, and I NEED time outdoors in green spaces. So instead I take my paper journal to the park or an outdoor cafe table and I read Mink River and I write and I check my phone and repeat. And who wants to take a laptop to a park or outdoor cafe table. Not me. It's just been too nice to be inside.

Had a wonderful time in Squamish, escaping the 100 degree days here. There were some things wrong with that trip, including being trapped in a very warm area to sleep with no a/c or ability to open windows, and not being able to hike/bike/rock climb/anything outside Squamish offers, but I want to focus on the good stuff.

One funny thing happened with Natasha at our favorite cafe there. Natasha and I were picking up coffee and she was chatting with some locals, and on the way out, she said that the same two older guys sit at that same table every Monday morning.

There used to be three of them, but one of them died, and he was really wonderful in a multitude of ways, and Natasha was very attached to him, and only got to be friends with him for a little over a year. Natasha has a habit of befriending older gentlemen, they just adore her and she adores them and it works. It's very sweet and I've always loved this about her. The guys are always amazing, with extensive schooling and travel, highly impactful jobs and lives with endless stories to tell. I am in awe of them and would never be able to hang in a friendship, but Natasha is more refined and elegant and intelligent than I am, she has done far more interesting things and has also traveled extensively and has exquisite taste in art and participated in national level science competitions as an adolescent and won them, so, she can manage to hold sophisticated conversations with them that I could never achieve.

When Matt saw how upset she was, after this friend of hers died, Natasha recounted that Matt (her ex) commented to her that well, "if you don't want your friends to die, maybe you shouldn't choose your friends the way Sarah chooses her cats."

touché, lol.

Avalanche, my kitten, who will be a year old in August, who was chosen for me by Josh and Cynthia and Natasha en masse, as a way to dissuade me from my habit of only adopting old sick cats, is now an auntie. Fern, her sister, accidentally got pregnant this spring before they had a chance to get her spayed, and just last night, had her kittens. Natasha has Avalanche's brother and sister in her house right now, Rocky and Fern, as their family went out of town on vacation. Taiga, Avalanche's dad, thinks he is the dad of these kittens and is attending to them lovingly, the same way he did with Tundra's kittens. Meanwhile Tundra and Rocky are totally disinterested in whatever Fern is doing with new babies, lol.

They had suspected Fern to be pregnant but didn't think the kittens would come while they were away, so Rocky and Fern's humans are planning to return home early to be with the new babies. Fern had three kittens, "Not 2.5 like Tunda," laughed Natasha - Avalanche was half the size of Rocky and Fern when she was born. She is still smaller than all of the other cats, but she's healthy and energetic and the happiest cat I have ever known.
