got frostbite on our run this morning with Josh's friend Bob, up on a road in the west hills of Portland called Fairmont. my left fingertip turned blue. i couldn't feel it at all. i was nervous. it warmed slowly in the warmth of the livingroom, while i held a cup of yellow leaf tea from Bob's wife, Sabine.

when it hit the pins and needles stage, instead of the intense pain i've often felt while out in backcountry conditions or cross country skiing, i just felt wonder and i felt a little bit like i was on drugs, high on the sensation of it. i stared at it and could not stop talking about how tingly it was. the blue color was gone. it felt like there could have been flames leaping out of the tip. there was this strange floating sensation as if the tip of my finger wanted to fly away off of my hand, or like, there was a balloon tied to it, lifting it, tugging at it.

it was really wild, i was fascinated, it was uncomfortable and very intense but not at all painful. every nerve was screaming but just in rejoicing being able to function again, i think, after going silent for half an hour of a chilly morning.

one could take drugs to feel new sensations, or just get frostbite once in a while.

running on a road was a bit sketch with so much ice everywhere, but nobody fell, thank goodness.

the current forecast says it's 34 degrees but i just walked lunar and there is no way it is that warm. or i just got overly chilled running and can't handle any degree of chill right now.

will go get a latte and get some groceries and make josh some soup, methinks. he requested soup.

I was always enamored by extreme cold and the tales surrounding it. In Jack London's "To Build a Fire", the chechaquo fights to survive but ultimately succumbs due to frostbite -- which won't allow the use of his hands. It just amazes me how powerfully romantic nature is but I'm glad your frostbite ended in a much better fashion albeit your dreamy experience of it.
