Snowgasm '08, round two
Dec. 20th, 2008 10:56 am(Happy Thing Meme: Day 5.) The snow is so gorgeous outside.
It's very cold and windy out there. It'll take some time for me to brave it for another walk to Ristretto. Gotta take pictures though. It's too pretty not to.
From weather.com:
A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND FREEZING RAIN REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM THIS MORNING TO 1 PM PST SUNDAY.
A STRONG MOISTURE LADEN PACIFIC FRONTAL SYSTEM WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA THIS WEEKEND. THIS SYSTEM WILL BRING A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF SNOW AND FREEZING RAIN TO THE GREATER PORTLAND AND VANCOUVER METRO AREA... AS WELL AS THE LOWER COLUMBIA RIVER VALLEY... AND THE INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR IN SOUTHERN WASHINGTON.
SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 10 INCHES ARE EXPECTED FROM THIS STORM BY THE TIME PRECIPITATION CHANGES OVER TO SLEET OR FREEZING RAIN LATE TONIGHT OR EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED TO FOLLOW THE SNOW IN SOME AREAS SUNDAY MORNING... PARTICULARLY NEAR THE GORGE AND ALSO IN WIND PROTECTED VALLEYS.
I was just telling Chris last night how we're due for another ice storm. Portland is known for its freezing rain. Not sleet. Liquid rain that freezes to the surfaces it hits on contact, creating thick coverings of ice that weigh down and knock down tree branches and turn streets and sidewalks into ice rinks. It makes things look like they're encased in glass. It's beautiful and terrifying. I haven't seen this in over five years, and we normally get it every three. Eeep!
